Coffee Conversations

Dear God, I come before you as humble as I know how this morning after waking up I had three minutes past the time I was supposed to be in church. Fighting with my seven-year-old to get in the car when the neighbor does not respond to the text I send Asking if she can keep her so I can pray in peace we get head to Ikea only to discover that they have breakfast, but that their dairy delivery at least the milk supreme has not arrived and to add insult to injury that they’re out of their heart shaped waffles, for the medium breakfast! And I offer the woman beside me the opportunity to go ahead of us in line and she offers to share the milk. She returned to buy so she could have some in her coffee. I share the conversations I’ve been having with you over this substance, which turns out not to be a substance at all, just an altar, where we either rise to or chain ourselves to it mistaking it for our commitment to you Jesus, I remember when I first asked what it is for was about coffee that continues making it a point of attack in my life. I realize that it was the comfort I associated with it and substituted for relationship with you. When I Succumbed yet again to my desire for comfort in excruciating circumstances you gave me yet another indication of the problem with the practice, not the substance. You put in front of me an ad for coffee that said red coffee understands. I realized that personifying coffee was further indication how far from relationship with you we had strayed. Thanks for this morning’s reminder and another opportunity to make it to church as I intended on time only this time for second service.

Dear Daughter,

There's so much I want to say, want you to know that you know, want you to experience and discover. There are so many stories I want to share, but how can I do that when I am hungry and so want a cup
